Girls Varsity Soccer vs. Woodridge HS School

Game Date
Oct 18, 2018
Score
MINUTEMEN: 4
WOODRIDGE HIGH SCHOOL: 1

For the second year running, the Revere High School Girls Soccer Team eliminated Woodridge from the playoffs. This time last year, Revere were seeded 4th and came from behind to beat 1st seeded Woodridge on their own field. This year, the Minutemen are seeded 1st and had the benefit of home field advantage for the Sectional final round of the postseason. Revere had the majority of possession during the opening exchanges, but squandered a number of great opportunities to open the scoring and settle the nerves. With Revere unable to break the deadlock despite the amount of possession, there was always the threat that Woodridge would sneak a goal and make things difficult for the Minutemen. Everything changed however with just over 3 minutes remaining in the first half. Revere won a corner on the left hand side which Julia Effinger fired into the heart of the Woodridge penalty area. Woodridge were unable to clear the ball and Anna Clarke looped a header over the Woodridge goalkeeper and into the goal. With Revere leading 1-0 at half time, the next goal was always going to be important, and it duly arrived when Emily Albert went on a long run into the Woodridge penalty area and found Kylie Cannon in space. Cannon played the ball back with her first touch and Albert calmly placed the ball past the goalkeeper and into the goal to double Revere's advantage. The third goal wasn't long in coming when Adison Novosel controlled an attempted Woodridge clearance and lobbed the ball back over the goalkeeper and into the goal. Kylie Cannon rounded off the scoring when she broke clear of the defense and fired a left footed shot past the goalkeeper. Woodridge scored a consolation goal late on when Revere goalkeeper did well to palm a shot onto the crossbar only for a Woodridge forward to follow up and score. Revere play Kenston at home on Monday evening in the District semi-final as they look to repeat their District Championship from last season.
